GAC-IQAC in collaboration with the Teaching-Learning and Evaluation Cell, Government Aizawl College organised a One Day Workshop on ‘Professional Development of Teachers’ at the Conference Hall, Mualpui Campus on the 12th August, 2022 from 10:30 am - 4:00 pm. The Resource Persons were Prof. Lalbiakdiki Hnamte, Director, College Development Council, Mizoram University and Dr. Mary L. Renthlei, Associate Professor, Department of Education and Chairman of the Teaching-Learning and Evaluation Cell, Government Aizawl College.
The workshop commenced with opening remarks by Mrs. Zolianzuali, Coordinator, IQAC, Government Aizawl College.
In the first session, the resource person Prof Lalbiakdiki Hnamte delivered a talk on ‘National Education Policy 2020 (An Overview).’ She highlighted the challenges proposed in the National Education Policy relating to the access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability faced by the current education system, the importance of early childhood care and education, curtailing dropout rates and tracking of students. Moreover, the National Education Policy proposes the reduction of curriculum content to enhance essential learning and critical thinking, experiential learning, flexibility in course choices and to develop multilingualism and the power of language. A three-year and four-year multidisciplinary Bachelors’ Programme consisting of major and minor courses with multiple exit and entry is prescribed by the NEP.
In the second session, the resource person spoke on the ‘Roles and Responsibilities of Teachers as Professionals’ focusing on the role of a teacher in using different teaching methods and providing materials to educate students, motivating and inspiring them. The responsibility of a teacher is to provide an engaging learning environment and supporting the students. Useful skills for teachers mentioned by the resource person are patience, adaptability, imagination, teamwork, risk taking, constant learning, communication, mentoring & leadership.
The third session on ‘Professional Ethics and Presentation Skills for College Teachers’ was presented by Dr. Mary L Renthlei, emphasizing the status of teachers with regards to professional ethics. She highlighted the need and importance of professional ethics, teachers and their relationship with colleagues, non-teaching staff, guardians and the society at large. She brought into focus presentation skills for college teachers which include variations in voice, movements & questioning, audibility, pace, pitch, pronunciation, pausing, energy and enthusiasm, eye contact, gestures & movements, confidence and use of points.
The workshop was attended by 58 faculty members and concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Mrs. Laldampuii, Assistant Professor and Member, Teaching-Learning and Evaluation Cell.
