Govt. Aizawl College organised a Green GAC Day on Monday the 12th June 2023, following on the state government's observance of Green Mizoram Day on the 9th June.
A brief formal programme was held at 11 am at the college Conference Hall. The Chief Guest was the Honourable Minister of Environment, Forest & Climate Change, Govt. of Mizoram, who spoke of how increasing awareness among Mizo youth and students of the importance of planting trees has led to the state now having an enviable 84.5% of forest cover. He expressed his hope that the trees planted today would be well looked after, that they would help to improve air quality, and encourage and increase birds and wildlife around the area. The Minister also touched on the subject of carbon credit and how it is possible to capitalize on quality air in a world that is being increasingly exposed to and endangered by hazardous and toxic emissions.
After the programme, the Minister planted a tree in the college campus which was then followed by a mass planting of trees and saplings by students, faculty and staff. As many of 200 saplings had been collected and were planted at the event.
