I  The College     
 
Govt. Aizawl College, initially a private Arts College catering to the need of the public as the second oldest college in the city, was established on January 13, 1975 and, added to it were    Commerce and Science Streams in 1986 and 1988 respectively. Science Stream was detached from the college in 2001 following the policy of the Government of Mizoram to amalgamate science stream in Zirtiri Residential Science College.
 
The College was first affiliated to the NEHU, Shillong, Meghalaya, on July 15, 1975 and later to the Mizoram University on July 2, 2001. The College was recognised by the UGC in 1986 under Section 2f and 12B of UGC Act, 1956 and was taken over by the Government of Mizoram on January 1, 1986. The College, awarded B+ in 2004, is now awarded ‘B’ (2011) by National Assessment and Accreditation Council.
 
The College caters to 8 different subjects in Arts and 15 different subjects in Commerce. The academic programmes include Computer Certificate Course of three months and six months duration, IGNOU centre, UGC-sponsored Coaching classes, Translation Proficiency Certificate Course, Certificate Course in Insurance, Remedial Coaching Classes, and National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology (NIELIT) Study Centre, Talent Development Programmes and a Health Centre. The College, which is centrally located and easily accessible to public in the picturesque city of Aizawl, provides a congenial atmosphere for serious studies.
 
II      Mission, Goals & Objectives

    To impart higher education by providing suitable ground to achieve all-round development of the ability, talent and personality of the                   students and ensuring that they become good citizens.

    To provide vocational and professional education for specific jobs or professions including self-employment.

    To help form good habits, to acquire knowledge and skill, and to develop healthy interests and attitudes.
 
    To make sincere efforts to educate  students with suitable education so as to carry out various activities required in a dynamic modern                         society.
 
    To provide incentives to creative minds.
 
    To prepare students for competitions at national and international levels.
 
    To emphasize the importance of athletics in physical and mental health, and to encourage students to participate in sports activities.
 
    To improve language skills.


III      REGULATIONS ON SEMESTER SYSTEM OF THREE-YEAR DEGREE COURSE

1.  a)    The under graduate courses shall consist of three academic years with two semesters in each year.  Each year shall be divided into two                   semesters. The first academic year shall comprise of the first and second semesters,   the second academic year - the third and fourth and                   the third  academic year - the fifth and sixth semesters.

      b)    Each semester shall carry 400 marks and the total marks for the entire course shall be 2400.

      c)    The papers carrying 100 marks  without any practical shall comprise of 75 marks for end semester examination and 25 marks for                   continuous assessment. Each paper in Commerce shall carry 100 marks out of which 70 marks are allotted for theory and 30 marks for                   practical. The theory marks will comprise of 55 marks for end semester examination and 15 marks for continuous assessment.


     d)    Three class tests (out of which one may be seminar or home assignment) carrying 20 marks each shall be conducted in each paper for                   continuous  assessment  and the average of the best two tests shall be taken as marks obtained in the continuous assessment in the paper.                   The remaining 5 marks shall be allotted to the attendance and class performance of the student.


      e)    Odd semesters (1, 3 & 5) shall be from July till mid-December while even semesters shall be from January till May each year.


      f)    End-semester examinations shall be conducted twice each year - October/November for odd semesters and April/May for even                   semesters.

        g)    No candidate shall be allowed to appear/sit in any course more than three times (including regular chance), and no candidate shall be                   allowed to appear/sit in any course beyond ten semesters from his/her admission.


        h)    A candidate shall register his/her name in the University in the first semester. 

        i)    A candidate shall be permitted/allowed to proceed from the first semester to the  final semester irrespective of his/her failure in any of the                   semester examination subject to the condition that the candidate  appears for all arrear papers of each course along with the concerned                   semester examinations.

        j)    A candidate is eligible to appear in the end semester examination only if he/she attends a minimum of 75% of attendance    as per University                   ordinance.

    2.    Eligibilty for Admission
    Pass in the Higher Secondary Examination or its equivalent conducted by any recognized Board of the State or Central Government. For                   admission to Commerce stream a candidate must pass in the relevant subjects.

    3.    Conduct of Examinations
     a) University shall conduct all End-Semester Examinations.

    b) All Practicial Examinations will be conducted by the concerned college. The concerned colleges will retain 75% of the Practical                        Examination fee and  the rest 25% will will be remitted to the University.

    c) Each College shall have a Moderation Board/Committee to moderate the marks awarded to a candidate through Continuous Internal                       Assessment and Practical Examinations.  The marks awarded in each semester (Continuous Internal Assessment and Practical                       Examinations) shall be forwarded to the COE, within one month of the completion of each end semester examination.

        d)    The question paper will contain Very Short (Multiple choice), Short answer and Descriptive. The distribution of marks will be as follows:-

          i) For Full marks 75
    Section A         10 Questions - 10x1 marks = 10 marks
    (Multiple Choice)    (Two Questions from each unit)

    Section B         5 Questions - 5x3 marks = 15 marks
    (Very short)        (One Question from each unit)

    Section C         5 out of 10 - 5x10 marks = 50 marks
    (Descriptive)        (One out of two Questions from each unit)
                TOTAL = 75 marks

           ii) For full marks 55
    Section A         5 Questions - 5x1 marks = 5 marks
    (Multiple Choice)    (One Question from each unit)

    Section B         5 Questions - 5x3 marks = 15 marks
    (Very short)        (One Question from each unit)

    Section C         5 out of 10 - 5x7 marks = 35 marks
    (Descriptive)        (One out of two Questions from each unit)
                TOTAL = 55 marks

     4.    Classification of Successful candidates
       a) A candidate must secure a minimum of 40% of marks (theory and practical where the need arises) in each paper.

       b) The marks obtained by a candidate in all six semesters shall be taken into account while declaring the results.

      c) Grades shall be awarded on the basis of marks obtained in each semester.

       d) Cumulative grade shall be awarded on the basis of grades obtained in all the semesters.

    5.    Ranking

       Subject-wise ranking shall be a warded. Top 10 candidates who pass all the examinations prescribed for each subject in the First                            Appearance alone in the final result are eligible for ranking/Distinction as per existing Ordinance. Gold medal shall be awarded subject-                     wise only to those candidates who secure overall first class position.
