Following up on the legal problems surrounding the new college campus at Mualpui, on Friday the 9th October 2020, the Govt. Aizawl College Students' Union called a press conference to make a statement at the Aizawl Press Club. A brief gist in English of their statement is as below. The original in Mizo here Press Statement of Students' Union.pdf

The Govt. Aizawl College Campus at Mualpui was gifted to the college by the Mizoram Government in the year 2012 under Land Lease number DLL 24 of 2012 covering 12471.50 sq. m. and was issued by the Secretary of Higher & Technical Education. As construction began, it was observed that private land with five Land Surveying Certicates (LSC) were within the Land Lease. Because of this situation, a court case has been in progress for a number of years, causing trouble for the college’s development.

The five mentioned LSCs are all in the name of Mr. E. Thangkhuma and his family. Even the Salem Local council and NGOs filed a complaint to the Land Revenue & Settlement Department, stating that it is public land. And although the court case is still in progress with the land being under dispute, Mr. Lalsangbera of Mission Veng, willfully bought the land despite knowing all about the situation. The disputed land is under cease order with no permission given to either party to take any action on the land. But while this order is being respectfully obeyed by the college authorities, Mr. Lalsangbera constructed an RCC wall along its borders, blocking the entrance road to the college land, effectively putting a stop to the construction of the College building which needs to be completed as soon as possible to enable the college to move into the new campus.

The Students’ Union believes that the action of Mr. Lalsangbera is a disgrace to Govt. Aizawl College and its students. On the 22nd September 2020, we had requested the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner to take serious measures on this issue.

The students of GAC will never allow our rightfully given new college campus to fall under private property and we declare that we will fight to the very end to protect and preserve our college land. And we notify the new owner of the five LSCs, Mr. Lalsangbera to stop causing trouble on the college land and demand that he surrender the LSC to the college. We also strongly request the Government of Mizoram to take quick measures regarding this issue.

On Monday, the 12th October, a meeting with the state Chief Minister, Pu Zoramthanga, was held at his office on this issue. The college was represented by the Principal Professor C. Sangluaii, Students' Union leaders and members of the Mualpui Steering Committee.
