Under the aegis of the college Research and Development Committee, eight students represented the college at the SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) Symposium organised by the SDG Coordination Centre Planning and Development Committee on the 28thMarch 2023 at Vanapa Hall. Four students each from the Economics and Commerce departments participated on behalf of Government Aizawl College.

The Planning & Programme Implementation Department, Govt. of Mizoram, had earlier distributed the sum of Rs. 60000/- to each college to undertake immersion studies of their respective adopted villages and chalk out projects for sustainable development. The eight-student team along with three faculty members of the Research and Development Committee had thus made a two-day sleepover visit to Hmuifang on the 23rd and 24th February 2023. Hmuifang village had been declared a tourist spot in 2012 and been very popular as such. But over time, there has been a decline in its popularity and the college team had thus conducted a survey to ascertain, among other things, reasons for the dwindling of tourist appeal.  The study concluded that lack of maintenance largely contributed to the gradual lessening of tourist footfall to the village, and that a forest-based plantation solution with a rebranding of the village as a nature lovers’ paradise and ecotourism destination could reverse the crisis.

It was the presentation of these projects that formed the basis of the SDG Symposium & Localization Competition on the 28th March.  Twenty two (22) colleges within Mizoram participated in the competition. Samuel Vanlalruatsaka and H. Lalhruaitluangi, both from the 6th semester Economics Dept. co-presented the powerpoint slideshow. Unfortunately the college did not bag any prizes but the proposals set forth in the presentation will continue to be put to use and implemented in the development of Hmuifang village as far as practicable by the adoptee institution.
