The Department of English organized its fourth annual Poetry/Prose Writing Competition on the 26th February 2024 at 2 pm at the college Conference Hall. Mrs. Elizabeth L. Hmar, Head of Dept., chaired the programme. The event was organized in collaboration with the English Alumni Association which had been formed in November 2023 and the office bearers, namely the President, Secretary and Treasurer, attended the programme and gave away prizes and certificates.

The theme this year was on “A National Historical Figure.” The participants gave readings of their poems/essays before an audience of 2nd, 4th and 6th semester English Core/Major students. Since there were only six themed entries this year, the participants also gave readings of poems they had written which were not necessarily related to the theme. The Alumni President and Secretary also presented poetry readings, giving a well-rounded literary touch to the proceedings.

The winners of the 2024 Writing Competition were
1. Rosalynd Lallawmsangi, 4th sem. for her poem, “Fearless” (on Jyoti Singh also known as Nirbaya)
2. H. Vanlalchhanhima, 4th sem. for his poem, “Mahatma of the Mali” (on Jyotirao Govindrao Phule)
3. Lalnunmawii, 4th sem. for her essay, “The Daring Ropuiliani” (the Mizo queen and freedom-fighter)

All participants were presented a certificate of appreciation. 98 students, 4 alumni, and 8 faculty members attended the programme.
